Hi, I’m Evan Marc Katz. I’m a dating coach for smart, strong, successful women who want to find lasting love. Here’s how I got here and here’s how I can help you get there, too.
The summer before my senior year at Duke University, I took (and canceled) my LSAT’s and got a gig as the school newspaper’s comedy columnist. I told my parents I didn’t want to be a funny lawyer; I wanted to be a mediocre comedy writer. The joke was on me, as you’ll soon discover.
Moved to LA and was selected for the Warner Brothers Writers Workshop, worked as a writer’s assistant on the sitcom “Ellen,” finished in the Top 20 of the IFP Screenwriters Lab, placed in the Top 3 of the first Project Greenlight with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and went to UCLA Film School to pursue an MFA. I eventually made a total of $7000 in my career. (Thanks, Nickelodeon!)
JDate and I were like a couple with lots of chemistry and no compatibility. I was the employee of the month, created their online magazine (JMag), and gave dating advice on their singles trips to the Caribbean – but let’s just say that we were not meant to be. It’s not you, it’s me, JDate.
Wrote my first book, “I Can’t Believe I’m Buying This Book – A Commonsense Guide to Successful Internet Dating” (Ten Speed Press). Created the world’s first online dating profile writing company, e-Cyrano. Appeared in the New York Times, Time, CNN, and USA Today. Dropped out of film school to write and coach full-time. This was better than writing a thirteenth screenplay that no one would read.
Wrote my second book, “Why You’re Still Single – Things Your Friends Would Tell You If You Promised Not to Get Mad.” Appeared on the Today Show and CBS Early Show and got a lot more press than actual book sales. Still very much single, not following my own advice and wondering what’s wrong with me.
Finally figured out what was wrong with me and made the best decision ever to propose to my wife. Also created my first product, “Finding the One Online – How to Master Online Dating and Create the Love You Deserve.” Not only did it help thousands of women find men but it paid for most of my wedding, which was nice.
I had a business coach who told me that if I could explain why men disappeared, I’d be successful. That year, I wrote “Why He Disappeared – The Smart, Strong, Successful Woman’s Guide to Understanding Men and Keeping the Right One Hooked Forever.” I also cut men off my list and focused my energy on coaching my favorite clients: smart, strong, successful women who have everything but the man.
FOCUS stood for Feminine, Optimistic, Confident, Understanding, Self-Aware. Yes, it’s a lot for an acronym but coaching hundreds of women helped me discover what content I should put in the more elegantly named Love U a few years later. Oh, and my daughter was born in February. I’m not sure it’s relevant to why you’d join Love U, but it just seems wrong to leave out something that important.
Dating coaches don’t have the Academy Awards, so it was nice when my industry created its own award ceremony and gave me it’s first best dating coach Oscar (I can still call it an Oscar, right?) Oh, and my son was born. He’d be pissed if I didn’t mention him.
After listening to so many clients say they didn’t believe that love could happen for them and changing their minds, I wrote Believe in Love – 7 Steps to Letting Go of the Past, Embracing the Present and Dating with Confidence.” They say not to love any of your children more than the others but this is my favorite book I’ve written. So far.
I took everything I’d learned since I started coaching in 2003 and turned it into a comprehensive online course called Love U. 300 women graduated that spring and actually made me an award, which sits proudly beside my iDate Award. (Dating coaches don’t get many trophies, which is why we’re excited about the few we get.)
When I started in 2006, my blog was called Advice from a Single Dating Expert. Yet after posting twice a week for over a decade, I was a happily married father of two with a blog that has reached over 30 million readers in 239 countries and been named the #1 Dating Blog online. Seriously. I didn’t make that up.
It took me a lifetime to get here (and even longer for you to read about it) but I’ve never been more excited about my ability to guide you through Love U so that you can finally create a relationship in which you feel safe, heard and understood.
